Odds and Ends

Driveway
Clayton, NC

We left the RV Resort in Roanoke Rapids and arrived in our driveway on Sunday.  It felt really odd to pull in to the old subdivision again.  We have said our final goodbyes to our neighbors twice already but have returned after the house didn't close each time.  Really, really odd.

Another odd thing happened on Friday while sitting outside at the park in RoRap.  A couple was out for their evening stroll and the woman asked if I had a blog.  Well I said yes and she said that she was a follower although more of a lurker.  Bonnie and Richard have their house in NJ on the market and they are on their way to Texas to go to the RV Dreams Rally.  Another small world moment in the rv lifestyle.  We chatted for a while and enjoyed their company.  Hope their Mifi is doing well now.

Yesterday we sold our kayaks.  Let me back track a bit.  Gin checked Craigslist a few days ago to see how many were for sell and what would be a good price to ask.  As it turned out, someone had posted a "want to buy" ad for our exact models and they lived only a couple of miles from our house.  After emails were exchanged, Gayle came over and ended up buying both of them and our two hullavators.  We plan to replace them with a Seaeagle Paddle Ski soon.  It was so nice to get them off of the roof of the Suki.  It looked so sleek.  We took the opportunity to give it a full body spa treatment today (wash and wax and vacuum).  I must admit though, it will be hard to find the car in the parking lot after shopping. :)  Those kayaks on the roof kinda made it stick out in a crowd but now I can take it through a car wash whenever I want to.  An end to an era but the Paddle Ski will suit our needs just fine.

Rain, rain, go away

Stix n Brix, NC

Gin’s folks left the cg Wednesday morning.  It was raining just a little bit at the time.  We discussed it and decided to stay one more night.  We knew we would get wet either day so we chose to relax in the MH.  When it stopped raining for a few minutes, we went outside to put away the chairs and put up the awning.  We got out our pole and blocks so we could pry up our bad jack, and we were shocked to see it go up on it’s own.  If it had been raining hard, we would have had to pry it up.  Go figure.

Speaking of raining hard, a tropical storm system came in last night.  Heavy rain on the roof of a MH is VERY LOUD.  Yes, you have to shout at each other even if you’re only three feet away.  We’re learning how to play Mexican Train Dominoes so we gave it a try.  It was a noisy night.  I mentioned the nearby artillery the other day.  Well, we had nature’s artillery instead.  It was a little bit of thunder, but the pine cone grenades are what really made it hard to sleep.  About the time I drifted off, another one would hit and make me jump.

We got up about 9:00am and it was a break in the heavy rain.  Smudge really appreciated a quick potty break.  Here’s what site #13 looks like with a pond in front, beside, and behind us.

Gin put on her raingear to do the last bit of packing up (vu qube, cables, dump station etc).  We had brought our kayaks and never took them off the top of the Suki.  They were full of water.  We’ll carry them differently when we fulltime.  We’ll also need to come up with something better to keep the bikes dry.  Here’s Gin dumping some kayak water.  We like the hullavators but you will get wet if the kayak has water in it.

As she finished up at the dump station, the bottom fell again.  It wasn’t that bad to drive in thankfully.  I felt the wind only once as we drove over the bridge into Swansboro.  All things considered, if we were fulltiming, this would have been a “stay put” kinda day.

I have to work the next 5 nights so I’ll be quiet for awhile.  I’ll still find time to read your blog posts though.  Only 10 more months until retirement, but who’s counting (me of course).

Thanks for dropping by, and enjoy each day of your life’s journey by finding beauty in the ordinary.

Near Perfect Day

Cedar Point CG site #37
Croatan National Forest

OK so I left ya hangin’ for a day or so.  I’m sorry but this is such a Sylville kinda place that it’s easy to loose track of time.  Sunday was Mother’s Day so of course we each called our Mom’s for a nice chat.  Cell phones have changed our lives mostly for the better.  We mainly hung around the CG on a beautiful day.  There are a few geocaches in the area and a couple right here in the park.  We had logged in some a couple of years ago, but one of them (Marsha, Marsha, Marsha) is a puzzle cache where you get the clues for the coordinates from the nice nature trail.  We used those to find the cache in the woods.  We relaxed some more, and Julie (the camp host) came over for a visit.  Her daughter was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer after having battled other cancers in the past.  It’ll be an uphill battle.  Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.

Monday was an absolutely gorgeous day.  It wasn’t very windy or humid so we got the kayaks in the water.  As we paddled out into the White Oak River, it was low tide and very shallow.  The bottom near the boat landing looks like dark chocolate brownie mix.  It doesn’t smell like it though.  We didn’t have our GPS with us but I remembered seeing an island cache on the geocache website and thought we might could find it.

It was kind of a long paddle but it was such a nice day that we thought we could do it.  We found the little green island and the cache and headed back to the boat landing.

We were paddling into a head wind but we got there by keeping it slow and steady.  I was surprised at how shallow it was.  Gin got some nice shots of some birds.  Here’s a seagull drifting in the air.

And a Snowy Egret at the boat landing.  As we approached, he of course flew off down the canal.

This was our first time using the hullavators after rowing for a few hours, and it was nice not to have to lift the yaks over our heads.  They weren't cheap but I think they are worth it for us shorter folks.   We got back to camp and fixed an early supper.  It still felt nice outside so Gin fixed a good campfire.  There is lots of honeysuckle at our site so the fragrance fills the air.  The hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees like it too.

There was an Osprey drifting on air current way above us and we could hear one in the distance.  As the day changed to evening, we sat by the fire and listened to the whippoorwill call for his mate.  It was a nice ending to a near perfect day.

Treatment and catching up

Stix n Brix

Gin is resting now after her treatment. I have sneaked in a little nap also. It's not any fun for me to change from night shift to day shift all the time but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and it's not a train! I think it's... a motorhome!

Speaking of MH, the spring to fix the lazy jack has not arrived at the dealer yet. I was a little upset but what can ya do. I wonder how upset and disenchanted I will be when we full-time and it's time for service. I know the world doesn't revolve around us, but when we called the service department in early April, he said he was going to order the spring so he could fix it on April 21. He now says it's on back order and MAY be in on the 27th. Somehow I think he waited a few days to order it. Thankfully it isn't absolutely necessary to have it fixed to still go rving.

On a much lighter note, I got buzzed this morning by a hummingbird. He fussed at me some. He must remember our feeder from last year. I pulled it out of the pantry and put out some fresh nectar for our tiny feathered friends. It's the kind of feeder that suctions to the window. I put it right at the breakfast nook so we'll have visitors while we eat our meals.

Yesterday, Gin put the hullavators together and we put them on the Suki. It looks like a moose now with the racks on top but it will be easier for us to put the yaks up there after a few hours of paddling. We adjusted it and tried it out. My arms are a little bruised because I was trying to lift the boat totally wrong. We had a gentle rain so I'm sure that the weed n feed is working good on the lawn. I guess I'll have to cut the grass more often now. What was I thinking.

Well it's gonna be a long week end of work for me but it's only about 15 months left. I know how quickly the past year has gone so I know the time will fly by. And yes we have so much to do...yard sales, paint the house, power wash the fence, craigslist a few things, and almost forgot...enjoy life. ;)
